إِذَآ أَخْرَجَ يَدَهُۥ لَمْ يَكَدْ يَرَىٰهَا

If one stretches out their hand, they can hardly see it.

Deep Waters

Modern Scientific Discovery

Scientists have confirmed that the deeper you go into the ocean, the less light penetrates, until complete darkness is reached. Modern oceanography divides the ocean into three zones:

0–200 m → Sunlight Zone (light still penetrates).

200–1,000 m → Twilight Zone (dim light, insufficient for vision).

Below 1,000 m → Midnight Zone (absolute darkness, no sunlight).

In addition, scientists have discovered internal waves deep within the ocean, caused by density differences in water layers. These waves exist beneath the visible surface waves and were unknown until recent deep-sea exploration.

Qur’ānic Revelation 1400 years ago

"Or like the depths of darkness in a vast deep ocean, overwhelmed with waves topped by waves, topped by clouds—depths of darkness, one above another. If a man stretches out his hand, he will hardly be able to see it! And for whoever Allāh does not grant light, there is no light for them."

(Qur’ān 24:40)

The Qur’ān describes two major scientific realities:

“Depths of darkness, one above another”

Light diminishes progressively in deep water until complete darkness — exactly what modern oceanography discovered.

“Waves topped by waves, topped by clouds”

Refers to surface waves and internal waves beneath the ocean — a scientific fact only confirmed in recent decades.

Clouds above the sea block sunlight, adding layers of darkness on the surface, while waves beneath waves deepen the unseen layers below.

At the time of revelation, no one had the tools to explore beyond a few meters underwater. Submarines and advanced sensors were required to confirm these truths — yet the Qur’ān described them over 1,400 years ago.

Have they not travelled throughout the land to see what was the end of those who were ˹destroyed˺ before them?
