Reflection on Qur’ān 21:30–21:37
1) Qur’ān 21:30 — The Beginning of the Heavens and the Earth
“Do the disbelievers not see that the heavens and the earth were once joined together, then We split them apart, and We made from water every living thing? Will they not then believe?”
(21:30)
The Qur’ān first reminds humanity of the origin of the universe.
The heavens and the earth were once joined together, then separated.
Modern cosmology describes the universe beginning from a single extremely dense state before expanding — what scientists today call the Big Bang.
The Qur’ān points to this reality with a question:
“Do the disbelievers not see…?”
Creation belongs to Allah.
“He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth.”
(2:117)
“He created the heavens and the earth in truth.”
(16:3)
Then another sign:
Life created from water.
Modern biology confirms that water is essential for all known life.
The Qur’ān states:
“We made from water every living thing.”
(21:30)
“And Allah created every living creature from water.”
(24:45)
A reminder placed in the Book over fourteen centuries ago.
2) Qur’ān 21:31 — Mountains and the Stability of the Earth
“And We placed firm mountains upon the earth so it would not shake with them, and We made within it pathways so they may be guided.”
(21:31)
The Qur’ān repeatedly describes mountains as stabilizing the earth.
“And the mountains as pegs.”
(78:7)
“And We cast into the earth firmly set mountains lest it should shake with them.”
(31:10)
Modern geology shows that mountains often have deep roots beneath the surface, helping stabilize tectonic plates.
The Qur’ān describes them like pegs driven into the earth.
“And the mountains as pegs.”
(78:7)
3) Qur’ān 21:32 — The Protected Sky
“And We made the sky a protected ceiling, yet they turn away from its signs.”
(21:32)
The sky above us is not empty.
The earth’s atmosphere protects life from:
- harmful radiation
- extreme temperatures
- meteoroids
The Qur’ān describes it as:
“A protected ceiling.”
(21:32)
Yet many people look at the sky every day and do not reflect.
“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth are signs for people who reflect.”
(3:190)
4) Qur’ān 21:33 — The Motion of the Sun and the Moon
“And He is the One who created the night and the day, the sun and the moon — each floating in its orbit.”
(21:33)
The Qur’ān describes celestial bodies as moving in orbits.
“Each floats in an orbit.”
(21:33)
“The sun and the moon move by precise calculation.”
(55:5)
Modern astronomy confirms that the sun, moon, and planets move through space in precise orbital paths.
The universe is not chaos.
It is a system of precise order.
5) Qur’ān 21:34–35 — The Reality of Death
“We did not grant immortality to any human before you. So if you die, will they live forever?”
(21:34)
“Every soul will taste death.”
(21:35)
No matter how advanced civilization becomes, one reality remains unchanged:
Every human being will face death.
“Wherever you may be, death will overtake you.”
(4:78)
Life itself is a test.
“He created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deeds.”
(67:2)
6) Qur’ān 21:36–37 — The Nature of Man
“When the disbelievers see you, they only mock you…”
(21:36)
This was the response of many people to the messengers.
“No messenger came to those before them except that they said: ‘A magician or a madman.’”
(51:52)
Then the Qur’ān reminds us of something about human nature:
“Man was created from haste.”
(21:37)
Humans rush.
They want answers immediately.
They want signs immediately.
But the Qur’ān calls humanity to reflection, patience, and humility.
The Signs Around Us
The beginning of the universe.
Life created from water.
Mountains stabilizing the earth.
The sky protecting life.
The sun and the moon moving in precise orbits.
Yet the Qur’ān asks:
“Will they not then believe?”
(21:30)
“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of night and day are signs for people of understanding.”
(3:190)
The signs are everywhere.
"We have made the signs clear to you, if you were to use reason"
(3:118)
