Reflection on Qur’ān 5:98–5:100

1. Qur’ān 5:98 — Justice & Mercy

“Know that Allah is severe in punishment and that Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

(5:98)

Two truths.

Severe in punishment.

All-Forgiving. Most Merciful.

Qur’ān Explains:

“My mercy encompasses all things.”

(7:156)

“Indeed, the punishment of your Lord is severe.”

(85:12)

“Your Lord is vast in forgiveness.”

(53:32)

"Say, “Your Lord is infinite in mercy, yet His punishment will not be averted from the wicked people.”

(6:147)

2. Qur’ān 5:99 — Nothing Is Hidden

“The Messenger’s duty is only to convey. And Allah knows what you reveal and what you conceal.”

(5:99)

Message delivered.

Accountability remains.

"That is your Lord’s Path—perfectly straight. We have already made the signs clear to those who are mindful."

(6:126)

Qur’ān Confirms:

“He knows what is in the hearts.”

(67:13)

“Indeed, Allah is Ever-Watchful over you.”

(4:1)

“Not even the weight of an atom escapes Him.”

(34:3)

3. Qur’ān 5:100 — The Deception of Abundance

Say, “Good and evil are not equal, though you may be dazzled by the abundance of evil. So be mindful of Allah, O  people of reason, so you may be successful.”

(5:100)

Abundance ≠ goodness.

Majority ≠ truth.

Qur’ān Explains:

“If you obey most of those on earth, they will lead you away from Allah’s path.”

(6:116)

“But most people do not believe.”

(12:103)

“Few of My servants are truly grateful.”

(34:13)

Hadith – Holding to Guidance

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“I am leaving among you two weighty things:

the Book of Allah and my Ahlul Bayt.

If you hold fast to them, you will never go astray.”

Imam ʿAli (عليه السلام) said:

“Learn the Qur’ān, for it is the best of speech.”

Imam al-Ṣadiq (عليه السلام), the great-grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, said:

“The Qur’ān is the covenant of Allah with His creation.”

Hadith – (Criterion of Good & Evil)

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear,

and between them are doubtful matters…”

Imam ʿAli (عليه السلام) said:

“Do not feel lonely on the path of truth

because of the small number of its followers.”

Hadith – Ramadan & the Qur’ān

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Ramadan is the month of Allah…

the month in which you are invited to the hospitality of Allah.”

Imam al-Ṣadiq (عليه السلام) said:

“Everything has a spring,

and the spring of the Qur’ān is the month of Ramadan.”
