Reflection on Qur’ān 8:21–25
1. Qur’ān 8:21 — Hearing Without Obedience
“Do not be like those who say, ‘We hear,’ but in fact they do not listen.”
(8:21)
Some people hear the Qur’ān with their ears,
but their hearts remain closed.
They claim belief,
yet they do not follow.
They listen,
but they do not respond.
Qur’ān Explains:
"Indeed, We have destined many jinn and humans for Hell. They have hearts they do not understand with, eyes they do not see with, and ears they do not hear with. They are like cattle. In fact, they are even less guided! Such ˹people˺ are ˹entirely˺ heedless."
(7:179)
“It is not the eyes that are blind, but the hearts.”
(22:46)
True listening is obedience.
Without action, hearing is empty.
2. Qur’ān 8:22 — Rejecting Guidance
“Indeed, the worst of all beings in the sight of Allah are the deaf and the dumb—those who do not reason.”
(8:22)
When a person repeatedly rejects truth,
their heart becomes hardened.
Not because they lack intelligence,
but because they refuse guidance.
Qur’ān Confirms:
“They are like cattle—rather, even more astray.”
(7:179)
“They know only the outward of this worldly life.”
(30:7)
Knowledge without submission leads to loss.
3. Qur’ān 8:23 — Closed Hearts
“Had Allah known any goodness in them, He would have made them hear. And even if He had made them hear, they would still have turned away.”
(8:23)
Some hearts are sealed through repeated rejection.
They ignored guidance so many times
that it no longer enters.
Qur’ān Explains:
“So Allah sealed their hearts.”
(2:7)
“When they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate.”
(61:5)
Guidance is a gift.
It is lost through arrogance.
4. Qur’ān 8:24 — The Call to Life
“O believers! Respond to Allah and the Messenger when he calls you to what gives you life.”
(8:24)
The Qur’ān is not just information.
It is life.
Life for the heart.
Life for the soul.
Life for broken spirits.
Life after emptiness.
It gives meaning again.
It restores peace.
It brings light back into the heart.
Qur’ān Confirms:
“Surely in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find comfort.”
(13:28)
“We send down the Qur’ān as healing and mercy for the believers.”
(17:82)
“O humanity! There has come to you a reminder from your Lord, a healing for what is in the hearts, and guidance and mercy for the believers.”
(10:57)
“Allah guides whoever He wills to the Straight Path.”
(2:213)
This is the life Allah promises.
Peace.
Clarity.
Purpose.
Light.
Following Islam is not restriction.
It is revival.
5. Qur’ān 8:25 — Trials and Tests
“Beware of a trial that will not strike only the wrongdoers among you. And know that Allah is severe in punishment.”
(8:25)
Life is not free of tests.
Fitnah comes.
Pressure comes.
Confusion comes.
Hardship comes.
Sometimes it affects everyone.
Qur’ān Explains:
“Do people think they will be left alone after saying, ‘We believe,’ without being tested?”
(29:2)
“We will certainly test you with fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives, and fruits…”
(2:155)
“Do you think you will enter Paradise without being tested like those before you?”
(2:214)
“And We made some of you a test for others.”
(25:20)
Tests purify faith.
They reveal sincerity.
They raise ranks.
The believer holds firmly to Allah.
Conclusion — The Qur’ān Speaks
“So whoever believes in Allah and holds firmly to Him, He will admit them into mercy and grace from Him and guide them to Himself on a Straight Path.”
(4:175)
“This is the Book in which there is no doubt—guidance for the righteous.”
(2:2)
“Whoever follows My guidance will not go astray, nor will they suffer.”
(20:123)
“And whoever turns away from My remembrance will have a miserable life.”
(20:124)
