Reflection on Qur’ān 16:53–16:56
1) Qur’ān 16:53 — Every Blessing Is From Allah
“And whatever blessing you have is from Allah. Then when harm touches you, to Him you cry out.”
(16:53)
The Qur’ān reminds us of a reality often forgotten:
Every blessing comes from Allah.
Life.
Health.
Provision.
Safety.
Nothing belongs to us independently.
“And whatever you have of favor — it is from Allah.”
(16:53)
The Qur’ān confirms this principle elsewhere:
“And if you tried to count the favors of Allah, you could never enumerate them.”
(16:18)
“He is the One who created you, then provided for you.”
(30:40)
Every moment of existence is sustained by Him.
Even the ability to breathe is a blessing.
2) Qur’ān 16:53–54 — Turning to Allah in Hardship
“Then when harm touches you, to Him you cry out. But when He removes the harm from you, a group of you immediately associate others with their Lord.”
(16:53–54)
Human nature often reveals itself during hardship.
When difficulty comes:
People turn to Allah.
They pray.
They ask.
They cry out.
But when the difficulty disappears, many forget.
The Qur’ān describes this pattern repeatedly:
“When adversity touches man, he calls upon Us… then when We remove the harm from him, he continues as if he never called upon Us.”
(10:12)
“And when they board a ship, they call upon Allah sincerely… but when He delivers them safely to land, they associate others with Him.”
(29:65)
In moments of danger, the heart recognizes its true Lord.
But after safety returns, many return to heedlessness.
3) Qur’ān 16:55 — Ingratitude for Blessings
“So that they deny what We have given them. Enjoy yourselves — soon you will know.”
(16:55)
Some people respond to blessings not with gratitude, but with denial.
They enjoy the gifts of Allah yet attribute them to something else:
chance,
their own ability,
other powers.
The Qur’ān warns about this attitude.
“And whatever blessing you have is from Allah.”
(16:53)
True gratitude means recognizing the source of every blessing.
“Be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.”
(2:152)
Gratitude preserves blessings.
Ingratitude leads to loss.
“If you are grateful, I will surely increase you.”
(14:7)
4) Qur’ān 16:56 — Attributing Blessings to False Powers
“And they assign a portion of what We provided them to things they know nothing about. By Allah, you will surely be questioned about what you used to fabricate.”
(16:56)
The Qur’ān criticizes a strange contradiction.
People receive provision from Allah:
food,
wealth,
life itself.
Yet they attribute these blessings to false gods or imagined powers.
They assign a portion of their provision to things that cannot benefit or harm.
The Qur’ān reminds humanity:
“Say: Have you considered what Allah has sent down for you of provision?”
(10:59)
“And those whom they invoke besides Allah create nothing, while they themselves are created.”
(16:20)
Only Allah provides.
Only Allah sustains.
Only Allah deserves gratitude.
The Signs in Human Nature
Blessings come from Allah.
In hardship, humans instinctively call upon Him.
Yet after relief, many forget.
The Qur’ān calls humanity to recognize the source of every blessing.
“Whatever blessing you have is from Allah.”
(16:53)
“And if you tried to count the favors of Allah, you could never enumerate them.”
(16:18)
The question remains for every human heart:
Will we remember the Giver of the blessings —
or forget Him once comfort returns?
Every form of sustenance comes from Him.
“There is no creature on earth except that its provision is upon Allah.”
(11:6)
Even the ability to live each day is a gift sustained by Him.
“Say: Have you considered if Allah were to take away your hearing and your sight and seal your hearts — who is there other than Allah who could restore them to you?”
(6:46)
Every breath, every ability, every moment of life comes from Him.
“And if you tried to count the favors of Allah, you could never enumerate them.”
(16:18)
The heavens and the earth themselves belong entirely to Him.
“To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.”
(2:284)
“Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then established Himself above the Throne.”
(7:54)
Everything begins with Him.
Everything exists by His command.
“His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.”
(36:82)
The Qur’ān therefore calls humanity to recognize the source of all blessings.
“Eat from the provision of Allah and be grateful to Him.”
(34:15)
Because the truth remains clear:
Everything we have —
and everything we are —
comes from Allah.
