Reflection on Qur’ān 39:5–7

Nothing Is Hidden From Allah

1) Qur’an 39:5 — The Heavens Obey Him

“He created the heavens and the earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night. He subjected the sun and the moon—each travelling for an appointed term. He is truly the Almighty, the All-Forgiving.”

(39:5)

“The sun is not permitted to overtake the moon, nor can the night outstrip the day. Each floats in an orbit.”

(36:40)

“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and day are signs for people of reason.”

(3:190)

“He created everything, determining it precisely.”

(25:2)

Imam Ali said:

“The sun and the moon are steadily moving in pursuit of His will.”

Nahj al-Balāghah, Sermon 90

Imam Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn said:

“Allah has arranged the courses of the sun, the moon, and the stars.”

Man Lā Yaḥḍuruh al-Faqīh

The sky is not silent.

It is obeying.

2) Qur’an 39:6 — Created Within Darkness

“He created you from a single soul, then made from it its mate. He provided for you eight pairs of livestock. He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, within three layers of darkness.”

(39:6)

“He is the One Who shapes you in the wombs as He wills. There is no god except Him—the Almighty, the All-Wise.”

(3:6)

“We then placed each human as a sperm-drop in a secure place, then developed the drop into a clinging clot, then developed the clot into a lump of flesh…”

(23:13–14)

“Does He not know what He created? He is the Most Subtle, the All-Aware.”

(67:14)

Imam Ali taught that Allah knows every person’s place within the loins and wombs until they reach their appointed end.

Nahj al-Balāghah, Sermon 90

Imam Muhammad al-Bāqir said:

“Allah sends two creative angels into the womb, who form there whatever Allah wills.”

Al-Kāfī

You were hidden from creation—

but never hidden from Allah.

3) Qur’an 39:6 — All Authority Belongs to Him

“That is Allah, your Lord. All authority belongs to Him. There is no god except Him. How, then, can you be turned away?”

(39:6)

“Say, ‘Who is the Lord of the seven heavens and the Lord of the Mighty Throne?’ They will say, ‘Allah.’ Say, ‘Will you not then fear Him?’”

(23:86–87)

“Do not invoke any other god with Allah. There is no god except Him. Everything is bound to perish except Him. All authority belongs to Him, and to Him you will be returned.”

(28:88)

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“The best act of worship is to say: There is no god but Allah.”

Al-Tawḥīd

Imam Ali said:

“The foremost in religion is the acknowledgement of Him.”

Nahj al-Balāghah, Sermon 1

There is no authority above His.

There is no refuge outside Him.

4) Qur’an 39:7 — Allah Does Not Need Us

“If you disbelieve, then Allah is truly independent of you. He does not approve disbelief for His servants. But if you are grateful, He approves it for you.”

(39:7)

“O humanity! You are the ones in need of Allah, while Allah alone is the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy.”

(35:15)

“Whoever is grateful is only grateful for their own good.”

(31:12)

“If you and everyone on earth were to disbelieve, then surely Allah is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.”

(14:8)

Allah says in a sacred hadith:

“O My servants, you cannot harm Me, nor can you benefit Me.”

Hadith Qudsī, narrated by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“The one who eats with gratitude has a reward equal to the fasting person.”

Al-Kāfī

Allah does not need our worship.

We need what worship does to us.

5) Qur’an 39:7 — Every Soul Returns Alone

“No soul will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you of what you used to do.”

(39:7)

“Every soul is accountable for what it has earned.”

(74:38)

“No bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another.”

(6:164)

“On that Day, each person will have enough concern of their own.”

(80:37)

“Whoever does good, it is to their own benefit. And whoever does evil, it is to their own loss. Then to your Lord you will all be returned.”

(45:15)

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“A person’s feet will not move on the Day of Resurrection until they are questioned.”

They will be questioned about their life, knowledge, wealth, and body.

Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī

Imam Ali said:

“He surely will ask you about all your deeds, small and big.”

Al-Amālī

Every soul returns with its own deeds.

6) Qur’an 39:7 — He Knows What Lies Within

“Surely He knows what lies within the hearts.”

(39:7)

“We certainly created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than his jugular vein.”

(50:16)

“Whether you conceal what is within yourselves or reveal it, Allah knows it.”

(3:29)

“He knows the secret and what is even more hidden.”

(20:7)

“Know that Allah knows what is within yourselves, so beware of Him.”

(2:235)

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Allah does not look at your faces or wealth, but at your hearts and deeds.”

Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim

Imam Ali taught that Allah counts every deed and breath, every concealed glance, and everything hidden within the heart.

Nahj al-Balāghah, Sermon 90

People see the deed.

Allah sees the heart behind it.
