Reflection on Qur’ān 5:14–5:19
Qur’ān 5:14 — Breaking the Covenant
Verse:
“And from those who say, ‘We are Christians,’ We took their covenant, but they forgot a portion of what they were reminded of. So We caused enmity and hatred among them until the Day of Resurrection…”
(5:14)
What Was Their Covenant?
Allāh took a covenant to preserve and follow divine guidance—pure worship, true scripture, and obedience.
Supporting Qur’ān:
“They were commanded only to worship One God.”
(98:5)
“They distort words from their places.”
(5:13)
“Woe to those who write the Book with their own hands…”
(2:79)
Meaning:
Forgetting revelation leads to distortion.
Distortion leads to division.
Hadith
(Imam Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq — grandson of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ):
“When people abandon the covenant of Allāh, He removes harmony from their hearts.”
Meaning:
Unity is a gift that remains only with obedience.
Qur’ān 5:15 — The Coming of the Light
Verse:
“O People of the Book! Our Messenger has come to you, making clear to you much of what you used to conceal of the Scripture…”
(5:15)
What Was Concealed?
Truth was hidden—especially what would expose false beliefs and confirm the final Messenger ﷺ.
Supporting Qur’ān:
“Those who conceal what We revealed…”
(2:159)
“They recognize him as they recognize their sons.”
(2:146)
Meaning:
The Messenger ﷺ came to uncover what was buried and restore what was lost.
Supporting Qur’ān:
“There has come to you from Allāh a Light and a clear Book.”
(4:174)
Qur’ān 5:16 — Guidance Out of Darkness
Verse:
“With it, Allāh guides those who seek His pleasure to the ways of peace, and brings them out of darkness into light by His permission…”
(5:16)
The Condition: Seeking His Pleasure
Guidance is not only information.
It is granted to those who genuinely want Allāh.
Supporting Qur’ān:
“Allāh brings them from darkness into light.”
(2:257)
“This Qur’ān guides to what is most upright.”
(17:9)
“Whoever follows My guidance will not go astray.”
(20:123)
Meaning:
Light comes through sincerity, not pride.
Hadith
(Prophet Muhammad ﷺ):
“I leave among you the Book of Allāh and my Ahlul Bayt.”
Meaning:
The Qur’ān is guidance, and its true path is preserved through the Prophet ﷺ and his family.
Qur’ān 5:17 — Preserving Tawḥīd
Verse:
“They have certainly disbelieved who say, ‘Allāh is the Messiah, son of Mary.’…”
(5:17)
The Qur’ān Corrects Exaggeration
The Messiah (ʿĪsā) never called people to worship him—he called to worship Allāh.
Supporting Qur’ān:
“The Messiah said: Worship Allāh, my Lord and your Lord.”
(5:72)
“He was only a servant whom We favored.”
(43:59)
“Never would the Messiah claim divinity…”
(4:172)
Meaning:
All prophets are servants of Allāh.
Tawḥīd is the foundation.
Hadith
(Prophet Muhammad ﷺ):
“Do not exaggerate about me as the Christians exaggerated about Jesus.”
Meaning:
Love the prophets—without turning them into gods.
Qur’ān 5:18 — No One Is ‘Allāh’s Child’
Verse:
“The Jews and the Christians say, ‘We are the children of Allāh and His beloved.’ Say, ‘Then why does He punish you for your sins?’…”
(5:18)
True Honor Is Through Righteousness
Claims do not save anyone.
Only obedience does.
Supporting Qur’ān:
“The most honored of you in the sight of Allāh is the most righteous.”
(49:13)
“No soul bears another’s burden.”
(6:164)
“Every soul is accountable for what it earns.”
(74:38)
Meaning:
Lineage is not salvation.
Faith and obedience are.
Hadith
(Imam Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq — grandson of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ):
“Allāh judges people by obedience, not by ancestry.”
(al-Kāfī)
Qur’ān 5:19 — The Final Proof
Verse:
“O People of the Book! Our Messenger has come to you after a period without messengers, lest you say, ‘No bringer of good news or warner came to us.’…”
(5:19)
No Excuse Remains
The final Messenger ﷺ came so that no one can claim ignorance.
Supporting Qur’ān:
“So that people will have no argument against Allāh.”
(4:165)
“Today I have perfected your religion for you…”
(5:3)
“Muhammad is the Seal of the Prophets.”
(33:40)
Meaning:
Guidance is complete.
The path is clear.
Closing Reminder
Allāh says:
“Indeed, Allāh does not wrong people at all, but it is people who wrong themselves.”
(10:44)
Meaning:
The truth is not hidden from us—
we only hide from the truth.
